Interview with ABKMT Winner - Capt. John Thompson Jr.
The Kingfish Journal spoke with ABKMT tournament winning Capt. John Thompson Jr. today. The team, aboard the Hat Trick, consisted of Capt. John, angler Steve Walton and gaffman Denny Spence. When asked for their secret to pulling in their 57.3 lb. smoker John was succinct, "luck." John said the team decided to enter the tournament to support their good friend, tournament director Eddie Cameron. They didn't have any grand strategic plan, they did what countless kingfisherman do each tournament. It seems lady luck was with them on Friday. They hoped to hit a few inshore spots and do their best. After an uneventful morning they ran back to 4 Mile Rock late in the afternoon. John said the king hit on a ribbonfish on the downrigger set at 37 ft. When asked if this is the biggest king the team had ever caught, John replied, "Oh yea!" Well said.
